The Power of Micro-Interactions

In his 2013 book *Microinteractions*, Dan Saffer systematically defined this concept: "small interactions in a product centered around a single task." He proposed four components of a micro-interaction: trigger, rules, feedback, and loops/modes. A well-designed micro-interaction has every component carefully crafted.

Saffer argues that product differentiation often lies not in major features, but in these 3-5 second micro-interactions. If designed well, micro-interactions can produce deeper memory imprinting than a 30-second advertisement.

The reason is that micro-interactions require "active participation." Watching an ad is passive; scanning a QR code is active. Active participation produces memory depth three times greater than passive reception — this is the Levels of Processing theory published by psychologists Fergus Craik and Robert Lockhart in 1972 in the *Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior*. Their experiments proved: for the same information, subjects who "actively analyzed its meaning" retained memories three times better than those who "simply looked at it." Deep cognitive processing produces memory traces far more durable than shallow processing.

Your QR code scan is a micro-interaction opportunity. The guest actively picks up their phone, aims, and scans — their brain is engaged in "deep processing." Their attention is highly focused. These 3 seconds are a golden window for brand memory. But if you only use it to "add friend," you waste this 3-second deep processing window.
